I didn’t even get to the fridge…

May 11, 2024

…. before my brain was going ‘this makes no sense whatsoever’.

Not even artistic sense let alone internal story logic sense. Not even ‘we’ve got a big budget and we’re damn well going to spend it sense.

And you can only do so much of the ‘our characters know they’re in a story’ stuff and I think by episode two it’s maxed out my tolerance for it.

And the Doctor used the word ‘diegetic’ which is just too meta and self aware for words.

And the villain in the second one… Style should define a villain not ranting energy.

Still I like the new Doctor if not all the things he’s being asked to do. I like Ruby though I’m quite sure that the Big Reveal of her origins is going to disappoint me.

I shall try to suppress my Inner Grouch for the rest of the season. I think I know how my players feel when I start to get too fanciful around the gaming table. Yes, it is possible to go over the top when you’re playing made up games about elves and wizards and stuff. I’ve done it and these first two episodes are reminding me of the time I got irritated by Jenny explaining something in her RuneQuest game as ‘an allegory’.

I only worked out what you were talking about part-way through. Are they still making that, then?

(I note that they’re calling it “season 1”, so presumably Doctor Who (2005) is now a cancelled show just as much as Doctor Who (1963) is, and Doctor Who (2024) is the ongoing one.)

Are they repeating the mistake of making the programme for the vocal long-time fans rather than the casual viewers (of whom many are children)? That didn’t go well last time.

They are still making it having umm not exactly sold it to Disney but certainly having taken the Mouse’s shilling.

It’s season 1 of the new dispensation: for my money I would call the eras ‘London’, ‘Cardiff’ and ‘Hollywood’.

They are not catering to the long time fans so much: the protests of some of them (us?) who wailed when it was said that the first sight of the new series would be at midnight on Friday to conincide with the Disney+ release and not the six-twenty on Saturday ‘so we could all watch it together like back in the old days’… Well, that was ignored as far as I can tell.

Yes, there were references to as far back as William Hartnell with the Doctor reflectiing that in 1963 he was still living in Totters Lane in Stepney with Susan. And there was a tribute to the moment that Tom Baker’s Doctor showed Sarah Jane Smith the future that would happen if they failed to stop the bad guy. (With much better visuals because they have the budget.)

I think, if possible they are even less concerned with continuity and history than before. I can think of ways to make that work… But I don’t think I’ll enjoy what they come up with.

    Oh, hey-ho. Hey-ho.
